Collection Review: Irina Shabayeva

Irina Shabayeva

For the first time since Christian Siriano won Project Runway, I am absolutely thrilled with the winner they chose. Season 6 winner, Irina Shabayeva's, New York City inspired collection was impeccable. The detail, textures, accessories, everything fit together perfectly. The dramatic, high collars on her coats and sweaters added such an opulent feel to the overall collection and the different shades and textures of black made the lack of other colors unnoticeable for me. The attention to detail and intricate workings of some of her garments was astounding considering the amount of time she had to work in and tlhe budget she was allotted.

Beautifully crafted pants with such an amazingly
meticulous attention to detail and taiiloring.
I was surprised to find that some people were not as impressed with her collection as the judges and me, saying that her clothes were too dark and there was nothing special about them. I agree, the collection was dark but it told such a beautiful story. The idea behind the darkness was that clothes should function as a shield from the streets of NYC, a metaphor for how tough life can be in the big city. The collection does just that. The little black hats she paired with some of her looks reminded me of the carapace on a prawn and the oversized sweaters and coats were the perfect addition to the armor. Yes, the collection was dark however, it was not devoid of color. The blacks were rich and the skin of her collection was thick. Colors don't neccessarily have to be bright to be vibrant, they just have to tell a beautiful story and her collection sang to my soul!
Some of my favorite looks! Those hats were absolutely divine!!
